Reimagining Ocean Conservation In Hong Kong: The SeaYou Foundation Story

My name is Man Chee, and I am the founder of SeaYou Foundation, an ocean and environmental charity based in Hong Kong.

SeaYou was born from a belief that has always stayed close to my heart: People protect what they feel connected to.

Growing up, nature and the ocean always gave me a sense of peace, perspective, and grounding. Over time, I realised that many people care about the environment, but often feel disconnected from it in their daily lives. I wanted to create something that could bridge that gap, not just through education, but through real experiences that help people feel nature again. That is how SeaYou began. What started as organising beach cleanups in Hong Kong soon became much more than simply picking up trash. I saw firsthand how powerful it was when people stood on the shore, looked at the waste washing in, and truly understood the impact of human behaviour on our oceans. Those moments of awareness often became moments of transformation.

But I also knew conservation could go beyond cleanups.

As I am writing, SeaYou continues to organise community cleanups while expanding into innovation, education, and wellness-based environmental programming. We are currently collaborating with a young inventor, Marcus, to develop a microplastic removal device, working towards solutions for one of the most urgent yet often invisible threats facing our oceans. We are also partnering with a local algae startup in Hong Kong to explore how climate technology and marine science can be made more accessible through education and collaboration.

We truly believe that environmental conservation is not only about science or activism, it is also about human connection.

Through art, wellness, mindfulness, and immersive nature experiences, we help people reconnect with the natural world in a way that feels personal and meaningful. Because when people reconnect with nature, they often reconnect with themselves too.
Today, SeaYou Foundation works with the public, schools, and corporations to deliver ESG experiences, environmental education, and community programmes rooted in both impact and empathy. My hope is that SeaYou can inspire people to see environmentalism not as an obligation, but as a relationship, one built on connection, care, and respect for the world we are all part of.
